\nSui Jianguo is a Chinese sculptor born in 1956 in Qingdao, province of Shandong, China. In 1980, Sui Jianguo entered the Academy of Fine Arts at Shandong and specialized in sculpture. From 1986 to 1989, he studied at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, China. He currently lives in Beijing, China, where he is still a professor at the Central Academy of Fine Arts.
\nDirector of the sculpture department at the Academy of Fine Arts, it is thanks to Sui Jianguo that abstract and conceptual sculpture has been accepted by Chinese authorities. Surpassing the boundaries of China, he is probably one of the most promising sculptors of the 21st century.
\nBy sculpting his “bombed jacket” in the image of Mao Zedong, he wants to associate each compatriot in his introspective path. The jacket modeled by Sun Yatsen in 1911 and worn by millions of individuals in China symbolizes the paternity of a period that has marked an entire generation, an extraordinarily powerful cultural symbol.
\nMore recently, his Red Dinosaur 2002 (a symbol of Imperial China as well as of the People’s Republic of China) has “Made in China” engraved on its chest, a wink to the plastic toys of the early stages of China’s economic takeoff, a symbol this time of a millennial China awakening to the contemporary.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
